Overview and Mission

Alma Sol is a family-owned and operated, micro-boutique vineyard & winery, sourcing premium fruit from their estate properties and other acclaimed vineyard sites in Paso Robles. From the very beginning, the mission has been to craft exceptional Bordeaux wines, both single varietals and special blends – though they will occasionally be inspired to produce limited releases of non-Bordeaux varietals as well. Alma Sol hand-picks their grapes in small lots, respect the fruit, guide its natural potential, and simply focus on hands-on, artisan winemaking.

The story of Alma Sol began in 1980, when Nelson and Anne Cuevas acquired an 80-acre plot that would soon be known as Cuevas Vineyard. The Cuevas family's passion for viticulture took root in 1999 when they planted Cabernet Sauvignon, eventually supplying grapes to local wineries. It was in these early years that John and Lisa Cuevas, inspired by their weekend explorations of the vineyard and interactions with the local wine community, nurtured their deep appreciation for the art of winegrowing.

In 2009, John and Lisa officially launched Alma Sol, a name that embodies the two vital elements at the heart of their winemaking: “soul” and “sun.” While Paso is best known for its award-winning Rhone varietals and blends – John and Lisa decided that they wanted to make the best Cabernet Sauvignon they could by using Paso Robles fruit, to prove that a great Bordeaux-style wines could be realized in the Central Coast.

In 2018, John and Lisa acquired the Alma Sol Vineyard, with the goal of growing and producing all estate wines. They began replanting the vineyard, adding additional Bordeaux varietals to the vineyard.

John and Lisa personally oversee every aspect of Alma Sol’s operations, embodying the essence of hands-on, artisanal winemaking. They are intimately involved in every step of the process, from cultivating the Alma Sol estate vineyard to meticulously selecting the finest fruit from premier sources beyond their own land. Their deep commitment to quality and their relentless pursuit of perfection are evident in every bottle. Whether it’s crafting their wines with precision and care, managing the complex nuances of the winemaking process, or curating the perfect barrel program to draw out each wine’s unique character, John and Lisa are driven by a passion for excellence and an unwavering commitment to quality, integrity, and the art of winemaking. We hope you enjoy Alma Sol’s soulful craft!
